National-level seminar on CHHAPAI

The Department of Design & Research Cell, in collaboration with the Craft Council of Weavers Artisans, Shilpi Sansthan, and ADI, came together to organize a national-level seminar on CHHAPAI to commemorate Handblock Printing Day on the 25th of October 2023. This event was a celebration of the rich tradition of handblock printing, an art form that has deep historical and cultural roots in India.

The seminar aimed to shed light on the intricate and diverse world of handblock printing, with a particular focus on innovation in the field, encapsulated by the theme "Eye to I (Innovation)." The panel discussion, "Eye to I (Innovation)," was the centrepiece of the seminar and featured esteemed experts in the domain. Ms Anuja Kumar, a senior textile designer with profound knowledge of the art of handblock printing, acted as the moderator for this enlightening discussion.

The panel comprised four distinguished members, each representing a unique aspect of the handblock printing industry. Mr Vikram Joshi, a renowned researcher and owner of Gangotri, shared his insights into the evolving techniques and technologies within the realm of handblock printing. His expertise provided a glimpse into the future possibilities of this traditional craft.

Mr. Dheeraj Chhipa, an enterprising member of the community, offered a perspective on the entrepreneurial side of handblock printing. His success story and experiences were inspiring for aspiring artisans and entrepreneurs in the audience.

Mr. Brij Ballabh Udaiwal, an artisan and the Director of the Craft Council of Weavers and Artisans (CCWA), represented the craftsmen and their traditional knowledge. His presence ensured that the heritage and cultural significance of handblock printing were highlighted during the discussion.

Ms. Manisha Jani, a sustainable development expert, emphasized the importance of eco-friendly practices in handblock printing. Her insights into sustainable and responsible production methods were particularly relevant in the context of contemporary environmental concerns.

In addition to the panel discussion, the seminar featured a live block-making and block-printing craft demonstration by Mr Nawal Patel, an experienced hand-block printer, and Vikas Singh Ramkishan, a master carver of wood blocks. This hands-on experience allowed the attendees to witness the skill and artistry involved in creating intricate block designs and their application in printing fabrics.

The event was graced by various distinguished guests, including Dr Deepak Sankit, Director of the Craft Council of Weavers and Artisans (CCWA), Mr Kuldeep Tanwar, a senior designer, and Dr Badshah Miyan, a recipient of National and International awards for his exceptional contributions to the world of handblock printing.
